just wondering about cell phone coverage. I have Verizon. Those of you that went last year, any comments?

Not a problem at all. Its not the boonies, it is in the heart of Indio. I have never had any issues with cell service.
They even will have wireless available at the campsites in the main tent city area. I was able to tap into it from my rig, but last year they were having problems keeping the wireless up and running, but when it was up, it was great to be able to use for free.
thanks kymery...i forget there is civilization near by.. lol
Verizon is just the very best. I work in a concrete building and I'm just about the only one who can receive or send a cell call. I didn't have any trouble in Indio last year. I stayed in Desert Hot Springs and no trouble there either.
i love Verizon. Last night me and the boys went to alpine to go camping and nobody had reception but me. So everyone was using my phone all night to call their peeps. lol
hubbie works at verizon.... he's checking into additional coverage for the weekend. anyone know how many people are going to be there? are we talking 10k or 50k?
more like 50k
way more then 50k. I heard on the radio this morning GA is selling fast! Because of the good buzz from last year, the same ppl and new comers are getting their tix. More the merrier i say!
excellent. thank you! verizon has mobile cell sites they can send to events like this to beef up coverage. get this... they're called COWs (cell on wheels) and COLTs (cell on light trucks). what perfect names for our beloved stagecoach?? = )
Why would you need to beef up service. Come on guys, this is Indio, not BF Egypt, or Glamis for that matter...I work out there all the time, my parents live there and about 1 mile away are triple billion dollar homes, golf courses, high society, of course they have excellent service out there. It a huge city.
I know Indio seems intimidating to many, thinking it is desert, well it is, but civilized desert.![]()
Kymery. You are too funny!Yes you are right, indio is by far one of the nicest desert spots in cali.
no. coachella sells out at 50-60,000 and there is no way the attendance is anywhere near what coachella has.
also, coachella does have issues with cell service, usually later in the day due to the number of people there. if you can't get a call through, texting seems to be pretty reliable.
it's not there isn't already quality service there, or that indio isn't established enough.....
it's about capacity of the cell sites. let's say the (and i'm totally making these numbers up for illustration's sake) normal usage for the area is 10 calls per hour. the cell site capacity is equipped to handle that or a little above. during a special event, usage will jump exponentially - like to 500 calls per hour - and the site wouldn't be able to handle it. anyone above the 10 call limit would get "no service available." so they roll in the mobile cell sites to handle the incremental usage just for that event. other typical scenarios for this are the olympics, super bowl, etc. does that make sense???
OHHHH now I get it....
