9 out of 10 said Sugarland was the best act BY FAR! So, you have no clout based on that alone...

i mine as well add my thoughts to this thread instead of starting my own.
as i mentioned, i am NOT a country music fan, and bought the tickets as a gift to my gf. since the thread starter review was mainly about the MUSIC, ill stick to that aspect here.
sat we got there in time to see Victoria Williams, which was my request, of the 2 and a half i had, my gf accomidated them all. 1st of which was to see Victorias, especially since it didnt overlap any of the days main acts, my gf was MORE than happy to accomidate this.
after arriving we headed right to see her. got one of the front row of hay bales close to the stage. i THROUGHLY enjoyed Victoria, since, im more of an alternative/rock/punk kinda guy, Victoria was one of the 2 acts at SC that appealed to me. That being said, my gf didnt enjoy victoria as much as i did, which i can understand, like one of my most favorite acts, Kristin Hersh, Victoria's voice is an aquried taste. my gf commented that she didnt feel it when she started hitting the high notes. i thought Victoria's performance was great. i also enjoyed the you are my sunshine cover to end the set. the thing i DIDNT like about the set tho, was, stage right, our left, one of the "security" people blocking that side entrance, didnt shut his mouth during the whole set, and, instead of just going and talking to a chick he was obviously trying to pick up, he stood 15-20 feet away and screamed at her. i found that to be rude and inconsiderate.
my gf wanted to head over to the main stage to see Joey+Rory. she seemed to enjoy them, knew 75% of their songs. i thought they were pretty descent musically, got a pretty good reaction from the crowd.
2nd request was to go catch the 1st half of Nick 13's set. so after Joey and Rory got off, we headed over to the palomino stage. after buying the tickets, i checked out as many of the artists i could, nick's band tiger army was one of the acts i really dug. i like people doing different things, and, tiger army isnt directly one genre of music, and that i can appreciate that. i like the punk/country/rockibilly thing they had going on. picked up 3 of their cds. driving out to Palm Springs and then to SC, my gf didnt seem to be enjoying Tiger Army, so, she seemed hesitant, but, still excited.
Nick came out, and, personally, i think those 5 songs was the best block of music i heard all weekend. Nick's solo stuff bears a close resemblance, but is not the same as his band. its like, take out the punk aspect of Tiger Army and tighten up the band, and you had Nick 13. we both said the same thing about him, seems to "get" the buddy holly type music of the 50's as well as the pre famous elvis sun stuff. Nick couldve easily toured with many legends and fit right in and not stuck out.
so after 5 songs, we headed back for Phil Vassar, my gf commented about how she wished the music DIDNT overlap since she also felt that Nick was amazing, and afterwards said it was one of the highlights for her, and glad we spent the 20 minutes over there.
i really too wish they music didnt overlap so much, as i still feel Nick was EASILY the best act for me on all fronts of the weekend. he mentioned hes recording his solo album now, i really hope it comes out soon.
after this sat we pretty much stayed at the main stage. my gf pretty much sung everything the rest of the night.
Phil was good, again, not really my thing, when i checked him out during the months previous to SC, i found i enjoyed the song Life off his newest CD, but, LOL failed to play it. seemed to get a great audiance reaction.
Billy Currington was one of the acts previous to coming that i checked out and found myself digging a little, and, of the main stage acts, billy was my fav of the weekend, and IMHO net to nick the best. of coruse, subtract his massacring of Stevie Wonder's Superstituous from this.
Sugarland put on a great show, i dont dig the lead singers voice, but, it was obvious to me they got the best audiance reaction saturday. i do feel the need to say that during their cover medeley, i dont know what i was more at as loss for words at, them COVERING Miley Cyrus, or the fact that 70k or so COUNTRY music fans sang along to it.... while i DONT listen to any country music stations, i HIGHLY DOUBT that any of them play Party in the USA on a regular basis.... oh and LOL also like Phil, i found one Sugarland song i thought was kick ass, which LOL they also failed to play, their name sake song
Keith Urban again isnt my thing, and, not that my gf didnt enjoy his set as well, but we cut out about 3/4ths of the way through, at her suggestion to miss the traffic as we had the 40 minute or so ride back to Palm Springs to the hotel. i didnt feel like keith's show was over great, and i appreciate his attempts at lead guitar, but, it didnt "hit me" in any spectacular way.
got there sun bfore the gates opened to spend some time doing some shopping and such.
headed over to check out Mary Gauthier, who provided the most laughable moment of the weekend for me.... while waiting to start her set, some dude sitting right in front was on his cell... and she was making comments about that and the guy still didnt get off it, and she was just like "wow gotta be the most oblivious person in the world roght there" finally he did and everyone applauded.
Mary was great, stayed for 4 songs, she has a great voice, didnt find that the harmonies from her backups worked all that well, but when she was singing i was impressed by her voice, as well as her lyrics.
walking back, caught song and a half of truth and Salvage, i feel bad tearing anyone down, but, they, to me at least were just a bad wanna be skynard/allman type band failing miserably.
wanted to meet Vincent Irizarry and Kassie DePaiva, and then get food, so, after getting my DVD's signed, walked back through mustang so i could hear a few tunes by black prairie, another band i had an interest in due to the "experimental" nature of them, again, not very impressed, musically they werent good, and on their instrument they werent either, felt like if the guy from the decemberists didnt have anything to do with this band they prolly wouldnt get anywhere with getting a spot on this festival.
got some food and listened to Chuck Mead for a good 25 minutes while eating. Chuck was really good. tight band, really kick ass voice, my gf and i again were talking about how acts shouldnt overlap SO much.
back to the main stage for Williams Riley, whom i had no clue about, and my gf didnt know by name the local jon linn band came out.
the jon linn band tried. vocally, they werent good except when the girl was doing the songs, musically, they werent BAD, but, far from good. i can say tho as a used to wanna be musician, that the guitar players tone from the jon linn band was the best of any guitar player i heard all weekend. i was laying down on our towel when the set was about to start, but perked up when the dude started playing.
i felt bad for Heidi newfield. i think out of all the artists this weekend, SHE had the best energy, but that didnt translate into ANYTHING from the crowd. even when she did that johnny and june song, the crowd was dead. so, i felt heidi had the best attitude with the lack of crowd response from her. her band was good, and i LOVED that she covered Midnight Rider, but vocally, shes alot better on record than live. i also think she had one of the best moments of the weekend when she brought 2 little girl on stage to sing johnny and june with her. might not be a fan of her music, but ill always have a good thought about heidi just based off her attitude.
Jason Aldean was awesome. as a rock guy, i find his abuse of dropped d tuning for songs like Country girl and hicktown is A+. live, i agree, doesnt really feel like much of a country act. if you eliminate the lap steel, ud never know he was if u had your eyes closed. but u cannot deny that the guys songs have amazing guitar riffs. Aldean is someone i would go and see again, country or not.
as for Brooks and Dunn and Toby Keith, both were the same for me. didnt enjoy the music in anyway. BUT i cannot say they "suck" in fact, i have to give them props for being really great and tight live acts. one thing ive found over the years seeing alot of shows and some opening acts i didnt know.... even if you DONT like a bands music, if the band is excellent musically, you dont notice. my GF was loving every minute of toby and B+D, and, i was there for HER, so i must thank them for being exceptionally great musically cause i wouldve went crazy if they werent.
before B+D i wanted to go see as much of the oak's as i could. my parents grew up listening to country, and, i always hated it, but for some reason LOVED the oaks. ive even seem them, 5 or 6 timed with my parents in the past. so my gf obliged, and, we caught 2 and a half songs, and the oaks are still as good now as they always were...loved the..."how many people know us here? no doubt from your parents 8 tracks!!!" comment cause it was spot on. i am very happy to have such a wonderful gf that, being some place TOTALLY for her, allowed me to do some stuff i wanted to.
oh and the last thing, IDK what to say about the opening to toby keiths show. is it arrogant? was he PURPOSELY being a dick? i found that i thought it was in bad taste while it was happening to basically show a 15 minute ad for FORD at an event sponsored by TOYOTA when you were the headliner, but at the same time sort of agreeing with his disregard for that since, why is TOYOTA sponsoring a COUNTRY music festival ANYWAYS?
regardless. in general, as some one who doesnt enjoy country music, seeing how much my GF enjoyed this event, i honestly dont see how anyone going didnt enjoy it. and in the end, i had a good time seeing as how she had a good time. well worth the money. well worth the time.
Very well written overall. The only thing that you forgot to include was that Keith Urban only played four songs, but played them each 3 times. I turned to my wife when he sang You'll think of me (for the second time) and we both agreed that we had previously heard the song in his set. Are we the only ones that noticed this?
Sounds like you really made the most of your time there exzer. Glad you were able to enjoy the experience with an open mind. Which is more than I can say for a lot of people.
excer you hit the spirit of this festival spot on. Open your mind and explore it all. Tell me you tried the BBQ! LOL!!
I can't say I agree with your assessments, but that's OK. This music moves me and makes me feel. You get that elsewhere. You are looking for different things than I am. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. Really glad you had some fun!!!
its all good you dont agreee, people see things differently, its just a matter of respect that people can see and think what they want.
and the BBQ cookoff was pretty awesome. my gf and i both agreed out of all that we tried, which was, a good 80% of the booths? that when pigs fly was the best.
it was a great experiance, i had some issues with parking and such, which would be cleared up if each lot had markings about which they WERE as well as signs directing you to said lots from the lots all the way to the venue. there was no signage like this.
i found that the people generally were nice, whats funny was LOL i was expecting EVERYONE to be nice since when i joined here last week EVERYONE here was nice LOL
day 2 spot was better than day 1 spot we had for the simple fact until half way through aldeans set EVERYONE around us was nice and considerate and respectful... mid way through aldean this guy brought what looked like his gf, his little sister and her friend, and basically just plopped down where people had spots, and then like were taking the stuff of the people in front of us, IE wipes, water and such, my gf said something, the 2 littler 12 year olds everytime they went out brought food back, which the group proceeded to not only LEAVE, but the guy kept pushing it BACK further so it looked like our garbage.
other than these things, it was a great experiance, and, chances are, my gf and i will return next year. even if i didnt like the music at points, the acts were REALLY good, the BBQ section was pretty awesome. and most important she had a good time.
plus we were discussing maybe staying in Palm Springs for an extra day since there was some stuff there we wanted to do we didnt get to cuse we spent monday in Joshua Tree on the way back to her house.
but yeah, i did have a great time as you can tell since my posts are so daym long about ut LOL

Sorry you didn't like John. He is actually a friend of mine and they played SC last year also. They got the call to replace Willaim Riley two days prior.
He is one awesome guitar player, so is Fred, a couple are new to the band. He builds his own guitars, actually gonna do one for me if I can get my arse on it with him. :D Those were his guitars you were hearing.
Ok I agree and so do my daughters that Sugarland were GREAT. And so was Nick 13 I love country but my true love of music is Rockabilly and Psychobilly. I did enjoy all the acts that I saw on the main stage. To spend the whole weekend with family, friends and listen to live music is a good time just enjoying being together and taking it all in thats what its all about
I know I'm going to get slammed for saying this....but this is MY review.
Keith Urban, please sing your songs WITH US. I can see you asking on a song or two to sing your lyrics for you but not on just about every song. PLEASE sing to us and let us sing along. Even when the crowd overtakes you...we can't help it when we are in the moment.
Jennifer Nettles....you sing anything you damn well want to, just because YOU CAN!!! So few artists today can sing live just as good or better than on a CD.
I was so happy when all of Stagecoach booooo'd Brooks & Dunn....They deserved it.
Hear hear . . .
I didn't pay near a thousand bucks to hear some drunken, bloated (enthusiastic) beer-hog standing next to me sing the songs. We bought the tickets - YOU sing. . . . I think that's the deal, right?
This personal complaint goes out to MANY artists, not just Kieth Urban.
the jon linn band tried. vocally, they werent good except when the girl was doing the songs, musically, they werent BAD, but, far from good. i can say tho as a used to wanna be musician, that the guitar players tone from the jon linn band was the best of any guitar player i heard all weekend. i was laying down on our towel when the set was about to start, but perked up when the dude started playing.
Second song in for the John Linn Band, my exact quote to my wife and sister was "the band is better than the singer....by a bunch"....The chick could wail, but John Linn ( I assume he was the lead singer)....not so much....
Oh, see, I thought the band altogether was kinda bad, but that chick was AWFUL! It was like very very very bad karaoke, at least from where I was sitting. It may have sounded better in VIP, but everyone in my area was looking at each other like how on EARTH did they make it on the Mane stage. No disrespect, although I'm sure it comes across that way. Just weren't our cup of tea :)

So what did Simon think of the performance! Lol, sounds like idol judges!
