Is anyone else a little concerned about car camping instead of tent camping this year? It definitely makes transporting gear easier which is nice, but the way we camp is usually with a ton of people in a ton of spots, with many people carpooling to Indio. This new plan makes it so more people have to drive (forget about the carpool convoy competition) plus it leaves less room in each spot for all our partying, pop up tents, beer pong tables, etc. I hope at the end of the day the pluses outweigh the minuses.

The spots seem pretty big for the cars. Not sure but it seems like they are big enough to carpool out there and still set up a few tents around the car in your area.

I was kinda having the same concern, the fact that we dont have to carry everything probably outweighs all the negatives though! haha! I have a feeling it definitely will be a little crowded though.

I was wondering the same thing. It says your spot is 10x30 which is the same as last year. Are we supposed to fit our cars plus our tents in that spot? im hoping its one parking spot plus the 10x30 camping spot..

I can't believe we are expected to have our tents, cars and everything on the same size spot as last year. The 10x30 fit a 6 person tent and canopy perfectly, now I have to add my CRV?

Thanks Countrygurl! I definitely think the positives will outweigh the negatives, just thought I'd start the conversation as I knew it would happen eventually (and there will probably be 20 more threads on the same topic before the end of April). I'm also excited about how much closer it is to RVs this year!
I'm sure this also gives you a ton more space for day parking which I'm guessing is your biggest plus.

I am actually glad about the new set up. I have a truck, so I am just putting a mattress in the bed and a canopy over the entire thing. I think this will cut down on all the people taking more than one camp spot, as was done at the camping sites. Most of my people were spending so much time in the RV areas, that it will work out better for me.

Oh wow this is a huge change . . . hmmm not sure i like it - I dont really want my tent that close to my neighbors and it really leaves no room for party area . . . and yeah how does it work for in and out privilleges? Why did they change it?

vehicles in camping can not drive in/out. if you have friends camping with you that did not get a spot they can get a companion parking pass and park their car there. That lot has some in/out hours. You can get details on the onsite camping page.

Oh I didn't think about that! That eliminates Starbucks/cigarette/donut runs in the morning. and it also eliminates carpooling out there. I do see the pluses though.
Question: if we arrive with 4 cars and have 4 spots, can we make it like a horseshoe like the RV's do?

Well, damn. I was planning on flying out there from Ohio and getting a friend in LA to drive me out. No car = no camping. BUMMER.

You might be able to rent a car. I saw an ad for Budget @ 19.00 per day (weekend rate).

if we can't cook food because we cant bring stoves/bbq's- our only choice for breakfast is the breakfast burrito truck by the port-a-potties?
or how can we grab denny's at midnight? im pretty concerned

If you car camp you could rent a generator and bring a microwave and cook food.

The cars are parked in rows with fire lanes in between. All your stuff is inbetween the rows of cars. This is for the safety of everyone and at the direction of the fire marshall. You may try to coordinate parking 2 and 2 so the center area of all 4 cars is you guys if it's not too hectic at the time of your arrival.

There are no in/out car privs with camping on site. none of the camping area's allow any vehicle ins/outs. (rv or car camping)
You have the same options as the rv campers. If you have another car parked in companion lot, that lot has certain hours where people can drive in/out.
There are also free shuttles to the supermarket.
You can also bring a bike if you want to bike places. I didn't even know there was a denny's around there to go to at midnight. I think in/out burger or del taco are the only things open at that time. :p

Hmmm. I can also see the pros and cons. I'm tempted to try and meet up with a group that is car camping and do the horse-shoe model so we can have room to mingle, drink and dance. It that or we're going to be shootin' over the the RV camp. At least they're close!

This will be the first time we have done "car camping" and after viewing the picture's that were posted I have a concern about the spot. I have a Chevy Tahoe Z71 and we are going to bring a 6 person tent for the 5 of us coming. Anyone who has camped before can you give me your opinion? Basically I want to know if a 6 person tent is going to fit behind my vehicle? Thanks :)

We've only had tent camping where our cars were parked in a lot next to the tent camping lot. It will be a new experience for all of us.

This is what I'm hoping will happen. People like me, who have smaller cars, won't mind if your tent or supplies fall a little past your line. It seems silly for larger car spots to have to buy a whole second spot, especially when it looks like they are limited.
Everyone one is always in such a good mood too that I'm not too nervous about space. Unless there are people with kids... then my drunk ass will need to shimmer down a bit = )

Yah, kids can put a damper on things like that. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, I just don't think they need to be at tent camping 'cause it can get a little crazy.

Larger cars CAN'T buy a second spot, as it's required to have one car PER spot (no spots sold for just tents, etc).

Regardless......either way, we have to keep the cars in the designated spot. Looking at the pictures it's going to be a tight squeeze. If there are campers with only one car and not in a group, they will be all up on the people across from them. No privacy unless you're in a group.
For us, it will be ok since we will be a big group.

Just make sure you throw a few back before bed. I think you only really need to sleep there and optionally, have your meals there, depending on how much cook stuff you bring. Me and the buuds will probably bring our beer over to RV where there's more room and then for most of the time be jammin' in the venue.

I think pass out is the correct term. Sleep is not an option at SC. Just drink until your body needs a break for awhile, then the morning heat will get you going the next morning and you start drinking all over again. It doesn't really matter how packed in we are, it just means you're closer to more people to party with in the morning!
