I have never gone to Stagecoach before but have wanted to go. I have mentioned it to a few of my friends who also like country music. One of my friends is hesitant to go because she is african american. I was wondering how the atmosphere is there? Do you think my friend would feel uncomfortable there? Are there a few other people of african american descent who attend? Thanks in advance!

As you know, the majority of the people there are caucasian. There are a FEW African-Americans that attend, but literally that's in about 40,000+ people. We all know rednecks can be a little....er....racist so yes, there is that (but that's everywhere, regardless of race), but I think overall it's just a bunch of PEOPLE having fun and that they would totally be fine. I highly doubt any animosity would emerge, and would be disappointed if it did. So with all that said (I'm long-winded, sorry) I think your friend will be fine and have a great time.
I made a comment to a friend of mine the first year attending SC - "I didn't know so many "white" people live in Southern California"?
I enjoy all types of music and have been the only caucasian person at some concerts I attend.
I'm not going to allow anyone to tell me what I can or cannot do, go, see because of my race, religion, nationality, age etc. It's usually the funds that control me. This is one of the many reasons why I love California because of the melting pot that it is. Go and have a blast...all is welcome, come find me and I'll hang out with you and introduce you to all my kewl friends that LOVE music, parties, fun and food.

I was independently called "TALE-BAN" on several occasions by several festival-goers. I am not Middle Eastern or from Central Asia.

Could just be because you're an a-hole?? They're typically easy to spot...

Right. I'm an 'asshole' so making obscenely derrogatory remarks to me is justifiable. Nevermind that I served this very nation in the execution of combat in multiple foreign-soil shooting wars. Only in your 'deep' mind.

I am surprised this is even being asked....I never..and I mean NEVER even thought twice if I saw an "african american" or any other nationality for that matter at SC.
Everyone enyoys their time there...and I would be very shocked if anyone said anything rude to anyone outside the caucasion race. Darius Rucker seems to be enoying the Country Scene and I have never heard of him being bood off of the stage because of the color of his skin
In fact a very good, ole friend of mine was running the ropin area of the Hootin Nany (sp) and he is a very old school black man who tough many men to rope and ride.

While not black, I had an Asian friend go with me in '08 and had no problems at all. Should be just fine as long as they're comfortable hanging out with so many crackers.

Tell her to buy a two day pass and kick it! The atmosphere is welcoming and she will not be the only African American there. My best friend is African American and he was interested in going - no hesitation at all - but he ended up not going due to a family situation that same weekend.
Bring her!!!!

i am african american and i attended 09 stagecoach and had a blast. And i was the only one in my group of friends that was african american and I felt very comfortable there.
I plan on going in 2011 and having a blast then too.
Tell your friend he will have a great time:)

I would also be disappointed if there were any issues because of your friends race. A friend of mine (who happens to be black) has wanted to go for a couple years now, but just hasn't yet. Not at all because she doesn't think she'll be comfortable, but rather because we just couldn't get the plan together!

Stagecoach peeps are some of the most friendly I've met in a LONG time. I think you'll have a great time and I've not seen anyone treat anybody different due to color. =o)

I've seen folks of all colors and nationalities at SC. Never gave it a thought.
I have heard some comments. But they were few and far between and the commentators were obviously intoxicated. And the people the comments were directed at were defended.
I saw a man that would be a perfect poster boy for a 'good 'ol boy redneck'. Cowboy hat that was NOT bought new for the festival, white undershirt, flannel overshirt, skoal ring, boots that are used for their intended purpose and not a fashion accessory. Big, real, Cowboy.
I saw him respond to a comment by asking the idiots spouting off why they care what someone's skin color is and why it matters that anyone else is there if they aren't causing you problems. He told the young, drunk, jumping jackasses "Your behavior shows your stupidity and ignorance. Straighten up and stop showing your britches or me and the boys will learn ya." I'm not kidding. I about died with laughter. It was awesome.
It is there. It's everywhere. Still. Unfortunately. We haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of it for good yet. I have faith that one day we will.
All the people cheering and singing along with Darius Rucker didn't seem to mind that he's black. The people that didn't like Cowboy Troy cited his music, not his skin color.
It's just that country music has traditionally appealed predominately to white people. So when you have a huge get together like this festival, the hispanic, asian, black and other segments of society are not heavily represented. That doesn't mean there is anyone that isn't wanted or welcome.

TG..wish I was there for the "learnin of the boys" that made me laugh so hard!!
and very true about Cowboy Troy..not his color..it's his stupid music that I dislike (yes I have a strong opinion about his "stupid music" haha) For same reasons I don't other artists that are "caucasion"...such as Rascal Fats, and Taylor etc.
