Stagecoach online forum attracts real-world friendships

Maggie Downs • The Desert Sun • April 25, 2010

Among this group of friends, there have been engagements, marriages, sickness, solidarity. They camp together. They attend hockey games together. And each year, they reunite at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival.

The problem is, sometimes they forget each others' real names.

The friends are all acquaintances from the Stagecoach Message Board, an online community at Stagecoachfestival.com, where fans meet, post questions and discuss the lineup.

Several of these online friends who had developed a particularly good rapport decided to meet up during the festival.

That was three years ago.

The group of friends now numbers close to 100.

They gathered on Saturday afternoon in the barbecue area, many of them wearing the same printed shirts emblazoned with, “What happens at Stagecoach STILL stays at Stagecoach.” That's a play on last year's design that simply said, “What happens at Stagecoach stays at Stagecoach.”

User FestivalFan (real name Nancy) was the first to make a T-shirt, which catapulted the online buddies into becoming real-life friends.

“It just took off from there. Everybody liked being part of the group and getting together,” she said. “And then everybody wanted shirts to wear.”

It's an eclectic group, ranging in age from 11 years old to some pushing 70.

They come from all over the United States, including one Navy man who flew in from Washington.

“It's not a lot of people you would imagine together,” said ChevGir357 (real name Karena). “But it works. We get together and have so much fun.”

The bonds they forged online now last long after the country music ends.

“Everybody watches out for everybody,” said WestCoastLady (real name Shirley). “I just met these people last year, but they have been so welcoming. They are the kind of friends you keep for life.”

Just because people couldn't make the pic or have a shirt (you can still show up you know without one) it's was about all of us. Hooking up all year long at various concerts and events. Becoming good friends both on and off these boards. Of course our big party of the year is Stagecoach. We all live far and wide and don't always get to hook up during the year so for some of us it's only once a year...and that's a good thing.

It was great on Saturday with so many of us wearing the turquoise tanks, so many people commented on them, and "our group". Never got lost, just look for the turquoise !!
Looks as thought we're doing it again for 2011. Pretty neat the Desert Sun did an article about us, too. Thanks everyone! So sorry many weren't able to make it on Saturday for the picture, but we'll do it again next year! Btw, I think we sold about 80 shirts.!!!

But damn if I didn't get an ever so rare ( for me) hangover!!
Not the little headache. No. No. The one that you spin all morning
through lunch on the edge if barfing. Almost wishing you would
you know it never goes away until you start drinking again during Phil vassar
n start dancing!!! Uhhhh ya one of those!! Lol
but I was so sad not to be there for the photo.
I did get to see a few board members. Next year I won't miss it!!

Congrats on the fun shot and stuff that goes with it. On the brother/sister board at Coachella, we had our second group shot this year. Since GPS posted your shot over there (http://coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40090&page=12), i figured i'd return the favor:

So I went over to the coachella board to check out the stagecoach thread and apparently they hate us. I think next year we'll have to get together on the Wednesday between the two shows and have a brawl for board supremacy. We'll have to work hard though, I'm guessing they have a lot more people.

i don't think the haters should be paid much mind. Some horizons still need to be expanded with some of the members. There is some StageCoach love in there. If there is a brawl, then GPS, Cooter and i can referee. Something tells me the corn fed might have the advantage when it comes to brawling. i see a lot of healthier bodies at SC.

We got a call this morning from the vendors Pete worked with the past few years offering free passes and we're still sitting here on the couch! That, or maybe inflating those sheep we had in camp and tossing them into the crowd for bigger laughs.

Feiny...yes I love their comments about us.

It's very sad that people need to be bullies to make themselves feel better. WHATEVER. I'm sure that everyone in their group picture is nothing but healthy athletes and scholar's and such.....on the other side is our red-neck, honkeytonk, white-trash, gun totting, bar brawling, over-weight, elementry school drop-out country loving people that are not worthy.

What I don't understand it's supposed to be the LOVE of music and musicians that really should bring us all together.

Don't worry about it, country music's not for everyone just like every other genre of music isn't for everyone. Not sure why they dislike fans of country music, but to each their own.

They definitely are. There is a lot of love and good will at Coachella, but the generosity and family vibe at StageCoach can not be beat. i'm going to chalk that up to Coachella being more populated by young people at the earlier stages of their living. SC has more experienced humans. The young ones at SC are great as well, but i think they have a lot in common with the Coachellians when it comes to their partying and views that are only going to be expanded with time. The fact they choose these festivals to go to is hope their worlds will only get bigger and more wonderful.

and in all fairness to the coachella message board...it is a feisty/sarcastic/constantly joking bunch. we all rip each other new a$$holes on a daily basis, say mean things, but mostly never in a serious manner. you would think with how crazy it gets there that fights would break out the minute we come face to face with one another. but it never does because everyone knows it's just an internet message board and not to take it seriously, it's all smiles and hugs once we hit the polo field. i liken it to a sibling style relationship with all the rivalry going on that comes with that territory. believe me, the comments you are reading are nothing compared to what is said between members of that board to each other.

Kelly and I were stopped by a group of people on Saturday that said "hey you are part of the Whatever happens at Stagecoach group!" It will be difficult to change the phrase that seems to have identified our group.

I would like to see the same color for all, but as you know it's difficult to determine what works best.

A few thoughts from me-

I would like a larger font for the girls shirts next year with a more visible lettering color.
I would like a lighter color shirt.. dark colors are hot. Plenty of shirts went to ladies this year too. I like the vivid color, easy to spot in a sea of people.
You guys seemed to take off your shirts right after the picture !!
A couple requests for the men sleeveless shirts, or feel free to cut of the sleeves.
A different location for the group picture so more people can make it. Apparently not everyone knew where the BBQ competition area was.

I loved how so many people "personalized" the shirts...

Please... any one that has an idea... send it, email it, write it. I'll save them for next year .

We had mentioned a BRIGHT green (like flourescent green) - but what about regular green (like St. Patty's day green)? Those would be easy to spot, not TOO dark, but would work for guys and girls?

Yea, our theme should probably stay the same - or at least very similar - it's our "thing."

That's awesome that Shawn and Ashley at least tried!! But hey, the reporter who read the boards figured out where to find us! They should've know the "BBQ area" was the competition! LOL Darnit!! But hey - again - that's very cool that they tried!!!!!!

Yeah, It sure helped us to find our group in the midst of all the people. On Sunday I wore the 2009 tank and had at least 8 people ask me about it. I think the bright pink on black really stood out. As a matter of fact, when I stopped for gas on the way home (yes I slept in it and wore it home) some woman asked me where she could get one.
So it looks like you're gonna be really busy again next year Nancy!

I wore my "Viva Las Boobies" shirt on Friday and had no less than 5 people ask me where they could buy one....so I definitely agree that unique shirts are a huge draw!

I like the idea of green shirts for next year - maybe two different shades? And I don't mind a dark color - as long as it's available in a tank!

And I agree with what's been said about this year's shirts - the teal was great but the print could have been bigger/darker to stand out more :)

But I loved the shirts!!!! And now I think I'm headed to Old Navy to buy more colors ;)
