Upcoming rodeo takes city 'back to its roots'

Victor Morales • The Desert Sun • November 10, 2009

After more than a decade-long hiatus, rodeo is coming back to Palm Springs.

The community, which was partially shaped by a Western lifestyle and governed by a legendary mayor who embodied the cowboy way, will host March 12-14 the Palm Springs Wild West Fest Mayor Frank Bogert Memorial PRCA Rodeo.

It will include a rodeo competition sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, music festival, parade, ball and other events.

“We are going to bring Palm Springs back to its roots, its Western roots,” said Christopher T. Burkhardt, the CEO for Spur of the Moment productions, which will produce the event.

The last rodeo organized by longtime producer Cotton Rosser was in 1986. However, the Palm Springs Police Mounted Search and Rescue team took the event over until 1994, said Kenneth Piner, a member of Spur of the Moment's Rodeo Committee and retired captain of the search and rescue team.

The 2010 rodeo will take place on a 10-acre, undeveloped site on Avenida Caballeros east of the Palm Springs Convention Center, city officials announced Monday.

Organizers selected the site after considering several others, including Palm Springs Stadium, where a prior rodeo took place for decades.

The open lot is suitable because of its proximity to downtown and hotels, Mayor Pro Tem Chris Mills said.

“It will be great to have these types of activities back in the city,” Mills told a small group gathered Monday at the Bogert statue near City Hall.

Admission will be free, but events such as the rodeo will be ticketed, organizers said.

A part of the proceeds will benefit eight or 10 charities, Burkhardt said.

how awesome! cotton puts on a great show every time! i'll have to remember to see if i can afford to go. i can get into the rodeo free (prca companion pass) but i have no where to stay. when my grandpa got sick, before he passed away, he had an apartment out there. i have never stayed at a hotel/motel there. hmmmm.... if i was single, i'd stay with the rodeo guys like i used to, but somehow i don't think the bf would like that hahaha if you have never seen a Flying U Rodeo, you really should check it out!
