View Full Version : Forum problem

The forum is acting weird for me and I don't know where else to post/ask about this problem. There don't seem to be any forum moderators.

Usually when a thread has new posts in it the thread title is BOLD in the thread list. However, a lot of threads go from bold to non-bold even if I haven't read the new posts. Sometimes a refresh of the thread list makes the titles go non-bold.

If there are any admins or mods who see this please look into this. If you need any additional info to help diagnose this problem let me know.

Is anyone else experiencing this strange behavior?

that happens to me too. i think since there are SOOO many posts, it just remembers the ones that are new recently and bolds those. however, i know that there are moderators. they like to delete bad language and whatnot. i remember many conversations that are no longer on this board because they were deleated. don't worry, countrygurl will be here shortly.

It's definitely not because of sooo many posts. I'm on other message boards (also using vbulletin) that have orders of magnitude more posts than this site and I don't have this problem.

Also, if any admins are reading this I have a suggestion. Other boards I'm on have a little icon you can click on in the thread list that will take you straight to the first new unread message in a thread. Would be great if you turned that option on, that's the thing I miss most in these forums. Although that feature won't work so well if the site thinks you've read all the posts even when you haven't.

on this site, you dont have to click on an icon, it just takes you there automatically from the home page, all you have to do is click the name of the thread. you are right that once you open up a certain area such as carpools or something that you can not skip ahead, but you can still get to the last page easily.

That's not working for me. When I click on a thread title, even if it is bold indicating there are new posts, I go straight to the first post of the thread instead of the first new post.

hmm strange... admin, where you at??

newest post is last.

new people click on a thread and see the beginning of the thread and may read through it. It works better for them, especially since the majority of you tend to hijack threads (start talking about other stuff) and by the time you get to the last post it has nothing to do with the original topic.

As far as bolding/unbolding goes there is some weird cacheness I still havent figured out. I refresh and it shows when I have read a post.

Don't know if this will help:

USER Control Panel (User CP button main page)

Edit options (button on left)

Thread Display

Linear--- newest. (That how mine is set. and I get newest to oldest when I gon in to threads)

Now on the Bold/unbold

that happens to me so I keep hitting the back button instead of refreash.

Yep..this is how I do mine. Much easier to find the new post.

Glad to see admins added the "jump to first new post" feature! :D

If you haven't tried it just click on this icon http://stagecoachfestival.com/forum/images/buttons/firstnew.gif in the thread index and you'll jump right to the first new post you haven't seen in that thread.

OK, I appreciate the addition of the "jump" button, but it's not that much use when the site can't keep track of which threads have new posts.

I'm still having the problem where refreshing the forum index will turn threads from bold to non-bold without reading any of the messages in the thread. When the thread goes non-bold it of course loses the "jump" button and I'm back to square one.

I hope admins are still looking into fixing this because not being able to tell which threads have new posts is a PITA. Thanks.

ever clicked on the "new posts" button at the top? pretty easy to find where you left off since traffic is so low here. once i'm done reading a topic i just scroll to the top and hit "new posts" again and everything i have yet to read is still bold.

Yeah. that is how it works for me too...but It used to be that if you click new posts...all the ones I already read would go away...leaving only the ones I need to read. Sometimes they dont even change from bold, but on few occasions.

it has never done that for me, the ones i have viewed just aren't in bold any more, it's the same on the coachella board, always has been for me.

When you click on the title to the thread, at the top of the page under Reply, there's a link that says "View first unread post" or something like that. That will take you to the last post that you read in that thread.

This is getting so frustrating.

If I just visit the main forum page http://stagecoachfestival.com/forum without even entering a specific forum or reading a single post the site will reset all the forums as having been read. So when I return all the previously-new posts that I didn't read will have been flagged as read.

This really hampers the usability of the website.

Can't you guys fix this? I don't have this problem on any other vbulletin forum I use.

Also, would like to request an increase in the max number of PMs we're allowed to have before our box is full. Many of us are constantly hitting the limit.

I have the same issues with the all threads other than "Corral". And sometimes in Corral it does the same.

We will try to figure out the caching problem. I have no idea why it does that for only some people. That would leave one to believe it is user/computer/browser related rather than board related since it does not happen to everyone.

As far as PMs go.. The main fucntion for the board is for Stagecoach fans/country music fans to interact on it openly :). The PMs are a nice feature however if you plan to talk a lot privately with someone, we recommend exchanging email addresses. :)

I have the same problem with both FF and IE and it happens with different computers. I would say the problem is with the site or with my account.

I participate in other vbulletin message boards and don't have this problem anywhere else. On these other sites and can read threads forum-wide and I can always go back and see which threads have new messages that I haven't read.

I have problems with the site not loading when I try to open a thread. It gives me an error message and I have to hit back and try again until it goes through. I have been having the problem with the threads not displaying read/unread properly for a few months now. I have this problem at work and at home. On IE and Firefox.

If anyone knows how to fix this let me know. The settings are the same for all the boards I run. I have done online searches. I don't know what settings to adjust. I don't know why this is the only board with this issue and I don't know why it only happens to some people on here.

Have you asked for help on any of the vbulletin admin forums? I've peeked in there in the past and the people are super knowledgeable. I wouldn't be surprised if they could help you solve this problem in a jiffy.

If you get this problem fixed I'll do a little happy dance.

I've recently been working on a forum and think I may be able to help.

In the admin CP:
Set Thread/Forum Read Marking Type to Database (automatic forum marking)

Set Database Read Marking Limit to a high number like 365. I'm unclear if setting this value to 0 will make it unlimited, if so you might want to do that.

HTH!

This issue makes trying to keep up to date a major PITA, I'd love it if you fixed it!!!
