Breast cancer has affected many of us - especially women, and yes men too ... So I have decided to participate in the Breast Cancer Walk being put on by Avon. I am going to make a "group" so if any of you are interested in participating, please let me know. There is a discount code for event registration. You must also raise $1,800.00 as an individual.

We are thrilled to announce that planning is well underway for the 2009 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Los Angeles!

Your incredible journey will begin in Long Beach along Queensway Bay. Our Opening and Closing Ceremony will take place at the Queen Mary Events Park overlooking the bay with the majestic RMS Queen Mary in the background. We simply couldn’t think of a better way to unite, kick-off our weekend and celebrate our accomplishments!

Throughout your walk weekend, you will experience all the best that Long Beach has to offer. Beginning at the Queen Mary, you will walk along Queensway Harbor making your way toward The Pike (once known a famed West Coast beachside amusement park) and the Aquarium of the Pacific. You will then pass piers, harbors, and marinas while experiencing beautiful ocean views. In fact, the Long Beach Marina hosts over 3,400 boat slips making it the largest municipally owned and operated marina system in the United States. As you make your way south through Seal Beach, you will pass quaint, eclectic shops and adorable restaurants.

You will continue east into Long Beach, passing many beautiful parks and golf courses as you wind your way toward our Wellness Village Site! Your home away from home on Saturday night will be in our Wellness Village in El Dorado East Regional Park! This 400-acre park is the most significant inland natural area in Long Beach with over 100 acres of natural habitat. El Dorado Park will also provide you with the most comfortable camping possible. You’ll be able to shower, eat, and rest your weary feet after your long journey, all while enjoying temperate, beautiful Los Angeles weather.
After spending the night at the Wellness Village, you’ll wake up ready for your final day of walking! You will continue back to the beaches and will pass some amazing sites along the way. You’ll walk by the Pyramid at Cal State University- Long Beach as well as the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. As you continue on your journey, you’ll pass the famed Pacific Coast Highway and continue to Second Street in the Belmont Shores area. As you pause to do some window shopping, you’ll realize you are just steps from the beach and will soon be at your final destination, the Queen Mary Events Park. Your friends and family will be eagerly awaiting your arrival to celebrate your achievement!

From now until March 31st, you can register as a Walker for only $50 (a $15 discount from the 2009 registration fee of $65.)
Register online now at avonwalk.org by using Promotion Code 041509 or register over the phone by calling
323-931-3003. Don’t miss out on this great weekend register today!

Jenn, I just donated for you.

I was going to do this walk. But I am busy that weekend and just no way I could cancel. So I am excited to donate to someone I know on the boards.

My mom took her life last Sept. We did not know her breast cancer came back until her letters she left for us. She could and would not burden us anymore she said.

Thank you for walking for all of us!

Thank you Kymery for the support. I have ALWAYS wanted to do a walk/marathon, something of that nature and I figured no time is better than the present!

Sorry for your loss. I received your PM and am happy to put your and your mom's name on my shirt!

I have a grandma who is a 2 time breast cancer survivor, my 2 great aunts are still fighting the uphill battle. Breast cancer has wreaked havoc in our family and I feel this is the least I could do. I attended a tea put on by Kaiser about a year ago and that really inspired me. 40 miles is a whole lotta miles but I will remember each of your stories and use that as motivation along the way.

THANK YOU.

Go to this link here. It is Avon's direct website with my individual page that I made. You may donate in any denomination you choose, and just know that EVERY little bit is greatly appreciated. As I indicated above, if you have lost somebody due to breast cancer I would be happy to walk with their name on my shirt for the day -- PM me their name.

The webpage they provide you with really isn't very easy to navigate/set up so I have finally had the time to sit down and make some changes.

I will be walking in San Clemente this weekend I bought new walking/running (more so for running) shoes, and a pedometer today. Parents will be camping at a campground in the area and I have already set up my distance goals! I have received lots of advice from people who have participated in this event but it's the enouraging words and stories that really drive me!

I suppose you can say I never really sat down to think about it but man  26.2 miles in ONE day is covering some ground! I am very excited. ;)

I know this wasn't "formal" training but it was good for me. I was in Primm, NV this past weekend for the Lucas Oil Shortcourse Racing Series working for Bully Dog... I made an effort to park the furthest away from the hotel in the back parking lot and walk to and from the hotel room, when I went to the front desk for my room, I asked for the room furthest down the hallway so I was forced to constantly be moving.. and let me tell ya, those hallways are LONGGGG... Working for Bully Dog I walked to and from the races and while at the races, the policy is "no sitting".. So once again, standing/walking, etc. all day was good for me.. from 8 am - 7 pm...... LONG DAYS for sure.. Then going to Trace Adkins Sat night where I pretty much stood/danced all night, then the lil after concert deal they had going = more standing/talking/dancing. I plan on hitting my training hard this week .. I got clear ceramic braces put on my teeth today and the only way I know how to deal with pain is to busy myself... I will be walking 3 miles after work today. YIPEEE for mehh! I'll post more soon!

Right on Jenn!! Now that is some walking...you are dedicated!

Hey..my dad was at the Mint 400, and he got to ride the last 100 miles in the race car...and his team won!! I was sooo excited for my father to be able to be in a race car again. He hasn't been in one in years..just on teams. The smile on his face and the excitement in his story is awesome...I think he gained 15 yrs back.

You guys are AWESOME! Wow the SC boards REALLY stepped up as of right now, that's where the majority of my donations are coming from. I am really looking forward to meeting all of ya! Walked 3 miles last night.. Going to the gym tonight to SWIMMM..... Average about 20 laps at a "swimmer's pace" then the rest of the time continue to move around, use the kick boards, etc. Hopefully it's not too busy and I can hop on a treadmill and do a few miles that way too ... Thank you guys. I am really looking forward to September!

Latest update:

My attorney I work for has pledged $10.00 for every mile completed which is super cool. Once again, everybody from the SC boards has REALLY come through and I am really grateful.

For those of you that have been reading along/keeping up with it, my Grandma who is a survivor of breast cancer (x2) and is now not looking too good. The cancer has really taken a toll on her, not just the cancer itself per se but everything along with it - the treatments, the medications, etc. she's really not doing too well.

I lost my mentor/good friend on Monday to Cancer. He was the Senior Product Evaluator at American Honda and worked in the motorcycle/offroad division. He showed me the ins and outs of BAJA. Baja is in Mexico and whenever going to a foreign country things aren't the same as the US, he taught me a lot about mechanics, about myself - I was dating one of his riders for 3 years and he gave really good advice, and the best part was that we remained great friends after the ex factor and I broke up. I know it wasn't breast cancer but cancer is cancer in the end. It just really seems to be prevalent everywhere we turn! We all know somebody who has had cancer in one form or another.

Here's my training update:

Last weekend (Easter) weekend I woke up a bit early Sunday am and walked up to the local golf course. The golf course is slightly up in the hills, then I decided to walk up to the driving range which was yet another steephill/good distance. My dad and lil bro hit some balls and I learned that was going to be really good training grounds.

I will be in San Clemente this weekend with my family to celebrate my lil bro's birthday. San Clemente has a nice "nature hike" trail, the walk to the pier is a couple miles long, and I will once again be taking my 5 year old cousin along as he keeps me moving!

Sooo I walked a total of 6+ miles in one day.. The 6 was calculated by actual distance, not to mention the HUUUGE steephill up and down to the beach. I ran/jogged about 3 miles also... In addition to all of that I swam out to the buoys and then swam from buoy to buoy... I was feelin' kinda crappy but thought it was just allergies...

We were at San Clemente to camp for my little brothers birthday and had all of our family there including my Grandmother who is currently battling breast cancer... She is not doing well and is en route to the emergency room at this time. I don't need prayers, etc. just keep up with the positive energy!~ ;)

I had a rough start to this week as I am battling a cold and had to take my pup to the doggy doctor this morning for some stitches in his lip! Woo hoo for the week of Stagecoach ...

I say go for it! Raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research is critical...and you'll have fun at the same time!

I walk the Breast Cancer 3-day and I know it's not for everyone (it's a huge commitment) but I can imagine the AVON Walk creates the same energy and level of fun!

Rogerdale49, please PM me with Barbara's full name and I'll add her to the list of names that I walk to honor (we print all the names on the back of our team t-shirts and wear them for all 3 days of the walk)...

WestCoastLady
05-03-2010, 01:33 PM
From their website:

The Avon Walks are non-competitive weekend fundraising walks for all fitness levels that require a significant commitment from participants. Each walker is required to raise at least $1,800 in donations and prepare physically for the event, which offers the option of walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over the two days. Among the walkers’ ranks in 2009 were men and women of all ages, from 46 states and 4 countries, including more than 2,000 breast cancer survivors. This large, diverse group was united by their shared desire to eradicate breast cancer and help those touched by the disease.

Are there bars along the way?

The San Diego Komen 3-Day has the "Tittie Tavern"....a table set up on the route that serves everything from Mimosas to Tequila shooters :)

And yes, we saw LOTS of people in pink with their butts parked in bars along the 60 mile route - especially on Day #3!

i get to do my own little 5k walk in a couple weeks at bolsa chica state beach for the cystic fibrosis foundation, it's their annual great strides event...i have cystic fibrosis. volunteered a bunch when i was younger but this will be my first time actually walking (if i am recovered enough from surgery that's tomorrow, that is). looking forward to it! got kind of a late start fundraising-wise - just started over the weekend, but fortunately there is no minimum...phew! my sis, who also has the disease has already raised almost $1000, though, which is great...poor her, she will miss the actual walk since is sailing the sea of cortez with my dad right now for the next month, haha.
