View Full Version : Advice on tent option?

:confused:Just thought I'd see what you guys think. I have to replace my tent this year and my daughter is at that age where she wants her own space. Since it's just her and I, we only have the 8X8 space to work with so I've been looking for single person tent options. Problem is, they are expensive and look to me like they're clausterphobic.
I came across these tent cots and I think they might be just the ticket (even if they do look stupid), but I thought I'd see if you guys have any other ideas or if you think these would work?
http://www.tentcot.com/indexa.html
who cares about looking stupid (and it doesn't). Your off that hard ground that's a back breaker. If they offered a MAJOR air conditioning option then I would sign up for tent camping myself.

yea or i like to use those mats people use to lay out in the pool. you can get them at cabazon on the way there for like 99 cents and you blow them up with your lungs and i sleep on them. then again, im in my twenties and dont mind sleeping on the ground. but the pool mats work well and are very cheap.

I'd worry about your daughter. Some drunken fool could trip over y'all & you could get hurt. Also, not very secure for your stuff. Check Craigslist, estate/garage sales, for tents. Big Lots starts getting tents in now too. You have plenty of time to get one & clean it up if it's used. Go to $1 store for pool rafts, & get a couple spongy, shelf liner place mats there to keep from slipping off the plastic mat, or buy a roll of it. I've seen the rolls at Dollar Tree. Get clothes pin/clips & hang a beach towel from middle of tent to divide it up. I think $25 for a tent is a better & safer investment than the cot/tents...some Patron sipper might not see ya & run right over ya.

ya. my pool mat idea was if you had a larger tent. just a little disclaimer. didnt realize you were after the small one person tents. those look retarded... just saying....

I have seen those "tent cots" they have them at Bass Pro Shops. Personally I would want her in my tent. There is a lot of partying...and I guess if you trust her to not sneak out once momma is passed out...then give her just one of those small one man tents right next to you.

Big 5 always has deals on tents.
Walmart and Kmart both have stuff like that also.
Or even Pic n Save, I mean Biglots (oops just dated myself) if you just want something to get through the event. Maybe you can find a deal on a two room?
We have a three room that is modular (you can use the main and one or two of the others attached to the ends). I think I'm going to use it as a two room that way I can use the smaller one for stuff.
I complete agree with the blow up pool mats, inexpensive and they help.

I hear what you guys are saying and I appreciate the ideas and suggestions. I can't use those tents.
My space is 8X8. I need room to sit down if I don't want to hang out in the tent all weekend. Those two room jobs, or one big enough to hang a divider in start are 9X7. I'm the only adult, I only get 8X8 feet of space. It's a tiny camp site. I remember from last year.
We had a 6X5 pup tent and we were very cramped. Had enough room left to sit in our chairs but no room to sleep in that tiny tent. Two of those is bigger than my campsite. That's why I was looking at other options.
Two one man tents is about the only way to go. They tend to run about 7 to 8X3. These cot thingies run about the same. I just liked these because it's a cot. I'm off the ground. Those little solo tents are SO clausterphobic! These seem better. They run 7LX3HX2.5W. My only other option seems to be to get a 7X5 tent and gaining a foot in length doesn't make us any more comfortable.
Kymery; she would be sleeping before I went to bed. If not she still wouldn't sneak out. She's afraid of anything new, including people, and she doesn't like being outside after dark. My timid little mouse is not going to be a rebel rousing problem is that area. Her mouth is a different story.
Honkytonker; I like the pool floats. These come with a cushioned mattress. They sure do look stupid, but I sure don't care. I'm camping. Looking good is the first thing to go. Besides, I have no one to impress. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, I'm just too old to care about it any more.
Bill; I appreciate the ideas. I've looked at Wal-mart, Target, REI, Campingworld, Army-Surplus, Sports Authority, and all over the web.
Do you think an A-frame would be roomier to sleep in that a dome? I found a pretty cool one that looks plenty big but the measurements were close to what we had last year so I don't know. Any experience with A-frames?

Maybe I'm wrong but I believe you have two 8x8 foot spaces, giving you about an 8x16 foot area.
FORUM TENT CAMPING
The Forum area is for “TENT” campers only!
NO SAVING SPACES - Arrive together to camp together
Each camper will have an 8x8 space (aprox. 64 square feet). It is a beautiful serene grassy area perfectly suited for tents located across from the main venue entrance and offers quiet private surroundings. The Forum offers tent campers their own free private parking lot located directly behind the grass line. All camping amenities included. Yes you can visit any of the other RV areas too.
At least that is how I take it.

Can you pay for the extra area ($50) for you daughter and use a bigger tent? Can she pass for over 15 and quaulify for her own space?

My options do seem to be severly limited don't they?
Then again, these things are ugly aren't they?
Then again, I'm off the ground and covered and I don't care if they're ugly.
One man tents are the same thing, each of us in a seperate tent, but they're tiny and on the ground. But they're real tents.
Uggg, my head is spinning. Why can't I just commit myself?

That's sweet Bill. I can get a tent. I'm not strapped for cash or anything. I just hate how expensive these little buggers are. I just want to be comfortable and also have room to sit down with my red cup. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it too!

Well - I sure won't raise hell if a neighbor kinda flows into our 8x16 space (if we have any room left)....hopefully you won't have cranky neighbors. ?
My head is spinning on what I'm even going to pack, how I'm going to pack it, what kind of tent we're going to get, I still have to get the umbrella for shade, food, drinks, chairs, do I need a table, etc. etc. etc. Oy!

I'm looking at camp food. They have no flame options for heating it up. I have a few ideas for snacks too. I have my umbrella stand, just have to pick up an umbrella. Got a cool bamboo stand online. I got a mat to put down on the grass for little miss thing so she doesn't have to see any buggies on the grass. Sheesh!
I'm doing pretty good. Just need to narrow down food choices and pick up the umbrella. Besides the tent thing. Of course.
Last year I was on the end of the row. That would be cool. All the people around us were laid back and very careful with my daughter. They watched their language and kept the noise down at night even though I didn't ask for such things. They were smiling and waving and very friendly with us both. I'm not worried about it.

I got one of those camping tables for $5 at Wal-Mart last year. Work like a charm. Even has cup holders. Has a carry case like a chair. Really light-weight. I'm all about cheap as possible! LOL

When I mentioned not having a hair-dryer to my sister the other day (she's a hairdresser), she was like "well...that's going to be an interesting look". We'll both have hats to mask it. Haha. I'm not sure I even know what packing lightly is like - I get the "take it just in case" thought from my mother....I'll thank her for it one day. Maybe.

Think of how many outfits you think you'll need (including under clothes and shoes) and pack one more.
Personal hygiene.
Snacks, food and beverages, cooler. Sitting, sleeping, table space of some sort. Shade. Sunscreen. Camera. Aspirin. Batteries. Hat. Bandana. TP and seat covers. Light jacket for evening. Money and tickets.
Done.

tgcali...here's my two cents...
First off, those cot things look like pure misery to sleep on!! Look at where the SUPPORT BARS are and think about where they are gonna be digging into your body when you are lying down.....yikes...
Also, do you plan on CHANGING your CLOTHES? Where are you gonna do that? Not to mention, store your belongings......
And, just cuz your daughter wants her "own space" does she really need it?? I mean, you are the boss, right?? ;)
One option you could look into is RENTING a tent from REI...they have really nice tents of all sizes, I have used them a bunch before I bought all my own tents.
And if your daughter is really gonna throw a fit about her own space, well HANG A BLANKET FROM THE ROOF and tell her to be thankful she has such a cool mom to take her to an awesome concert and camp out with her!!
Hope that helps..hehehe ;)

HonkyTonkAngel, thanks for the feedback. I do hear where everyone is coming from, I just feel kind of stuck on space.
I didn't mean to give the wrong impression. She's not going to throw a fit. I just wanted to do something nice for her. She's at that age and I thought I would just make the whole weekend super cool. Sleeping arrangements included.
There is a padded mat in addition to my sleeping bag to lay on. I'm used to sleeping on cots. I know they can be a pain. It's still better than the ground. And changing clothes would require laying down with these as well as one man tents. Sucks, but it's very short term. Two days. Camping is about roughing it anyway!:p
Besides, after seeing the pics on the site of our Troops using them I figure if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. Those pics are what made me even consider it in the first place.
As for storing our stuff. It's seven feet long and I'm five feet long. Whether it's a tent-cot or a one man, there's room for that.
My biggest problem, and the reason I was willing to indulge her desire in the first place, is that a normal tent big enough for both of us is too big for the campsite. It's not a question of means or availability. It's a question of space.

Yeah, I'm not sure where you are going change with those cots. I would feel trapped. What did you use last year because I thought that seemed to work.

Last year it was a 6X5 pup tent. It was too small then and she's really grown in the last year. No way it would work. We kept hitting each other if we tried to roll over. As for changing I have to lay down. I had to in the pup tent. I'd have to with a one man. Not fun but really not a big deal for two days.

Yeah, but the 1 1/2 ft at each end is tapered down, so loose space to put things.

I used to camp in a 5 man dome tent w/me, a porta potti, 1 playpen w/baby & 5 other kids. We had plenty of room & no way was that 8 x8. Today's Big 5 ad had a 7 x 7 x 48 in. tent for hummm, $25? I saw those cot things on CList for $75 each! Since you're 5 ft, you could bend over in the tent to change. You'll be at the concert most of the time or hanging w/buds. I would think sleepy time would be the priority, & no space to sit outside secondary. You'll meet neighbors who'll let you put up chair.
How about an 8 x 8 E Z Up & you add the walls? What's really the diff, except no floor? I guess I'm just confused on why you don't want to be in a tent. You don't have to, but you have to homestead your spot w/something.
