View Full Version : Kenny Chesney - Lucky Old Sun
Is Dave Matthews the next to try to go Country?
Is Kenny leaning toward Reggae Jazz?
i haven't heard the new KC cd yet.... is it even more Jimmy Buffet-esque than normal??

It seems to me he likes being down in mexico/cabo/ on his island. I think being there so much has an influence on his music. I like it. I saw him on Leno the other night and his band doesn't do the raggae thing as well as the whalers.

Ok, just finished listening to the new CD.....Jimmy Buffet-esque is an UNDERSTATEMENT.
Even the titles of the songs are straight outta JB's box set (boats, tiki bars, souls and sailors etc, etc)....now, lucky for me I am a JB fan and think Lucky Old Sun is a great album...for Jimmy Buffet.
As a Kenny album, well, I enjoy it, but DEFINITELY not country and definitely not enough up-beat party songs, so his next concert might be a snooze!! LOL!!
I realize KC has been more tropical/island country on his last few albums but this album lacks the country completely. So if you don't like that flavor of KC's music, do not buy this album sound unheard under any circumstances.
There. Thats my $0.02.
When I heard the first song with Dave Matthews (I like Dave and saw him in concert last year) but I'm like Kenny & Dave???
Then the second song has that great saxaphone rift in it...I'm like this is supposed to be Kenny Chesney. Where is the steel guitar at or anything remotely country.
My favorite song was 10 to 2.
Kenny is going to have to go off my auto purchase list when it comes to his "country" CD's. (sad for me because I was a fan) If I want reggae then I listen to Bob Marley...if I want to listen to Jazz then I'll go to Jamie Cullum.
Why do artists think we want something different than what's expected of them?

Ok.. I, too have listened to KC's new CD and to me, this isn't country. Way too sleepy. I love Jimmy Buffet but even his music has some pep and liviness to it. I do like the song "Everybody wants to go to Heaven", he did use Bob Marley's band for that track. That's a fun, upbeat song.
I like the old sounds from Kenny...

Well, goes to show what I have been saying all along. Country Music seems to be going down the tubes (IMHO).
That is why I listen to Texas type Country Music Stations instead. Love the feeling they give off. I am thinking someday there will be two different types of radio stations out here, one Alternative Country and one Real Country (oh, i know, I am ducking on that one...bring it on)
It is amazing the awesome music that comes out of Nashville, Texas, Wyonming etc, that never makes it to Cali, and I first guess would be is that you can't line dance to it!:D :D

Well, its all about NEW country here in SD....one of our radio stations is literally called "New Country 95.7".....the only positive thing is that they do play more songs off an album as opposed to just the current single, which is nice, but its mostly NEW artists (or new albums of older artists). Both SD stations stink IMO (sorry GSF) cuz they both play the same rotation of the same 10 songs at the SAME TIME!! So when I hear Taylor Swift come on and I race to change the station before veering my car into on-coming traffic, who do I hear on the other station....Taylor frickin Swift!!! Arrgh!!!! It happens so often, its unbelieveable.
I like road trips where I can get KFrog (??) or GoCountry (??) they seem to play a better mix of music than we get here in SD.....

Honkytonk...you gotta get Sirius...the radio...not the attitude! Would hate to hear you went off into a ditch over Taylor.
I love Sirius, channel 60 is more current country, but 61 is 80-90's country, then 62 is old country...aswesome!!! I have not listened to local radio but more than 1 hour in the past month or i would be in that ditch with you! I actually heard Achy Breaky the other day....UGHHHHHH

Well crap. I bought it thinking it couldn't be that bad. Wow. If my alarm clock only had a cd player. It rivals baseball for how to take a nap. I'm a big Kenny fan but that was weak. Too much $$, coronas, sun, and sand. I guess you can't eat tacos and sh*t hits. Not to be too bitter but that's $10 I won't get back.
enough said for me. it's a "no purchase".
guess this is the tough part of being an artist... you stay true to who you are and make the music you really want to make, but run the risk of losing sales/fans. must be a tough choice.
RR - LOL'd at the baseball reference... thought i was the only one that hated that "sport". ok, ready... DUCK. we're gonna get it.
Too bad Kenny won't purchase back his CD from me so I can go out and purchase something else that I want to listen to.
OUCH!!!! do you own Lady A yet??
country has a large ex-metaller population.... if you like the hard rock, i highly recommend the Buckcherry 15 cd. it's soooooo good.

I gotta agree with Rose. Someone gave me the CD and I want their money back. I like KC and I understand he likes the islands but he doesn't have to go all calipso on us. I think it was Kenny's name that sold the CDs more than the content..
Honkytonkangel US95.7 rocks, anytime I in San Diego that's what on my Radio, Gocountry105.1 is also great, they are kinda new but have a good line up.
Kfrog 95.1(?) and 93.9 are also big with me.
I spend a lot of time in my truck.
I kinda like Buckcherry once in a while too, don't tell on me
