So guess we have been too spoiled.

I've searched around for the best form of mass transportation and have found that vanpooling is the best. I started it about 7 months ago.

Just in case you need this info in the future: If you can get a handful of people together, you have it made. It beats buses and trains because it is more personalized to you (drops you off at the doorstep instead of a station miles away, you pick the people, etc.)

Of course, this will be needed more if $15 comes around.

thats a great idea...
In Europe they have car sharing.Saves people around 4,000.00 a year and sponsored by each city .Kinda like a costco membership of 100.00 a year then you use the share care when needed. No insurance paid or car payments..
I bet the lobbyist will stop that one from the auto makers to the insurance companies...
We all need to help and I very happy to hear you do your part..

Can you imagine...I just went to fill my Diesel truck at the 76 station, the dang machine stops at $75, which is not even 1/2 tank! So, I have to re-enter my card and add more.

IF it gets up to $15 per gal...ugh, my bank is gonna think someone is fraudulantly using my card.

I just got my daughters honda civic running that I gave her at 16, she now drives a mustange her father got her for grad last year, so the honda is now my put put car...although my step son turns 16 this weekend and it will be his, but for now it is MINE...alllll mine!! No one elses!! nanny nanny...(ok, nothing to be proud of, junkie, blue, beat up...but great on gas! so dont laugh at me when I drive by with my head hung low)

we, on the other hand, just got our second new car in as many weeks...now rolling in the family friendly mazda5(the raddest little mini minivan) AND racing in an infiniti g35, both with damn good mileage! of course, it's gonna suck when the leases end on both cars within a couple weeks of each other, but hopefully by then the lady will have sold her client his $20 million mansion.

You can't make statements like this and think they're correct. People should buy cars--not lease them. Secondly, people should buy cars with the intention of keeping them for 10 years. These are the smart moves and have been historically. Now, all of a sudden, when gas prices have dramatically changed in the past one year, the people in the middle of a 10 year cycle are supposed to just up and get a new car? Plus, if you would actually look into what you are saying, you'd find that the resale value for full size SUVs has plumeted--so there is no way for these people to get out anyway.

Go have your wife make $20 million and then generously help out those newport moms if you'd like. Heck, with $20M you could give them your Mazda and buy something that actually has even better gas milage--since you obviously couldn't swing that right now...f'ing lemming Mazda drivers).

Did you care about the black smoke before the price of gas went up?

Just curious and thought I would bring this up. It seems a few years ago people were trying to curb global warming, etc. and others were totally against them. Now, since gas has gone up, it kind of seems the people that were against the curb are now all of a sudden tree huggers.

It just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not in any way saying you are, but your comment made me remember about this and so I thought I'd bring it up. What do you think?

Yes...
I see you point on all avenues...
I have been a equine Realtor also for over 10 years...
The market is not that great yet still selling. I have decided to stay away from the business this year.It is way too much waste of fuel driving all the buyers around with too much inventory and making 20 offers wasting fuel.

I have one of those crazy escalades we all wanted years back and love it.
Yet it is older and paid for.I had thought lots of selling it and know no way want anew car payment.I have parked it in the garage and drive my BMW around also paid for yet 6 years old and no plans on getting a new car. When they are done and no longer work efficiently I will by a hybrid or wait until a new car has been created with new power option's this is coming. (Just a thought) Maybe this is why the gas Moguls want to make as much as they can now knowing there days are numbered....????

Yes so many different views come into play on the gas issue...

why buy a car that depreciates the moment you drive it off the lot? i lease a car, never have to worry about paying for any repairs and in a few years have a nice new car. also, mazda's have no resale value, so why would i want to own it?

and piss off, i actually wanted the mazda. what gets better mileage than that and has all the room? i am getting close to 30 miles/gallon right now. screw a full size minivan or suv. i have a 2 year old daughter and a new baby due in a couple months, so the mazda is perfect. sliding side doors, captains chairs in the middle, plenty of room for strollers and other kid stuff and 3rd row seating if we need it. it is actually the best car out there for our needs, price didn't matter, it was just nice to get something at such a low cost.

and the wife isn't going to make $20 million, she is going to sell a $20 million dollar home, big difference.

Cooter and HMR...both have good points...it is all on what you do in your life that decides lease vs buy.

As for my truck, I know I want 300k miles out of it, YES a diesel, blows black smoke, but the only thing that hauls my rig ang 4x4's into the desert etc..also used so much at home just hauling, kids bikes, camping, home repairs, moving, etc etc...so for that reason I bought it, now paid off and plan on having it 2-3 more years.

As for our family car, I bought a BMW on a lease. I knew (although they hold the best value) that I only wanted it for 3 years so no reason to purchase it, just turn it in when done.

Now even at this point we ever leased a new family car, kids growing up and hubby has company van. So saving there too. Really no need for luxury, fun or family car at this point in life. I borrow my sons Honda Civic to put around to save gas.

When cars get older, many times they cost more to keep past 5 years than to just buy a new one.

Interesting Tips on Pumping Gas

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold.

Remember that all service station have their storage tanks buried below ground.
The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

According to Reinert, "A hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicle emits only water. Carbon monoxide, however, is produced when hydrogen is made from fossil fuels, as we currently do. If we intend to reduce carbon monoxide, we must go beyond tank to wheel efficiency and tackle well to tank efficiency as well. We need to consider production methods from a comprehensive viewpoint." Most people don't even think about how many emissions are created when producing the fuel, only how many emissions are being spewed out of the exhaust pipe.
http://www.carlist.com/autonews/2004/image/toyota_fchv.jpg Toyota's Fuel Cell Hydrogen Vehicle .
It may be years before there are standards and codes for production, storage and distribution of large amounts of hydrogen. The hope of all concerned is that the production of hydrogen can become more efficienct, with less emissions. In the mean time auto manufacturers are working on vehicles that can run on hydrogen. .

I only do regular, but here's what I've seen.

Friday $4.41 costco in Rancho Mirage
Mon Indio $4.59 personal car
Mon work car Bi-fuel CNG $2.75 a gallon
Today Victorville work car $4.51 (apperently CNG not working).
Today Son in Rialto $4.49
Oh my..
I heard some are driving across the boarder to fill at 2.50 a gallon...
Ok how does Mexico rate to get 2.50 a gallon?

I know you drive alot mommie so I'm always interested to see what everyone is paying. Thanks for the up date much appreciated ...:)

i have to put 91 in my car. my prices are hovering near $5. I think everyone knows that already. lol. I am close to trying out my first metro trip to/from work. It would require a short drive 1.5 miles to the subway station (yes I could also walk this but that would take 20 minutes) to hopefully find parking and a $5 day pass to take one subway and one bus each way. It would require a 12 minute walk from the drop off to my work and vice versa. The ride itself would vary around 40 minutes-ish.

My normal driving route is 10 miles each way and anywhere from 40-60 minutes each way, costing me just about $5 per day calculating in insurance, gas, etc. So as you can see, I am just about at break even point. Almost same time and almost same cost as public transport. but here is the kicker.. It's actually cheaper to take public transport at $17 per week pass as opposed to $25 per week in gas costs. (5 days driving per work week).

So Right now I am paying for the luxury of driving myself. If it gets much worse I will have to consider economical savings/time vs luxury as I really could use that savings per week that I was used to having until prices got so high.

I am curious what others have thought about their current situations of time/costs.

Ok,
I so feel for everyone in a commuter status.
How are most going to make a change to compensate?
I don't know what to tell anyone commuting today?
This afternoon we had a real estate board meeting with many brokers in the industry regarding the decisions many will be make in moving closer to there work places. The cost must be very equal in discussions whether to move closer to work and pay a bit more in rent ( Or Mortgage), or purchase the high fuel cost they keep giving out each week...

I think this generation is in for a new day.
ooxxx:)
P.S I'm very thankful to work in my community.Unless someone pays me mileage and travel to leave the area to do my work I stay in my home office.

I have every empathy to all who comute...:(
Good question what do you do?

My hubby has us using our Biz Amex card from Costco, which after having spent the initial 16 thousand, bumped us up to a 5 percent return on gas purchases, at most gas stations. The regular costco Amex card gives you 2 percent.

So every little bit helps. As long as I dont go to one of those stations where they charge more if you use a credit card. Which I thought was illegal in CA. Hubby reserching this for me.

technically it goes against the shop owners credit card agreement however if they claim the cash price is a discount rather than the credit being more, that is a loop hole they seem to get away with. it would take the credit card companies to fight this, doubt they will.

Hey thats what he just told me, apperently you need to complain to your credit card company and they will follow up on it.

I think I may just do that and see if it helps.
Especially at one of those where they do it so sneakly (sp). So many people these days can only survive by using credit cards to carry them through the rough spots.

Apperently a law suit against the "Thrifty" gas stations on this issue has prompted their change to Arcos as this rule does not apply to ATM payments.

I know the trickle effect is what gets us all. They're saying food prices will go up due to the floods in the midwest. Feed will cost more so meats will be higher.

Yeah, I saw on the news they had video of this guy who pulls up to a gas station, with a huge enclosed tow trailer, he parks right on top of where they add the fuel from the tankers to the underground tanks, and he apparently has a hole in the floor of his trailer and the guys in side, sifen gas out of the underground tanks! Today, a barrel of oil spiked at $143.52, a (broken) record, once again. That comes at a time when the Los Angeles area has been seeing a two-week plateau in gas prices around $4.60. AAA reports gas in Los Angeles averages at $4.602, but LosAngelesGasPrices.com has gas tipping down towards $4.57.

However, with oil prices spiking as they are, the change in gas prices will be seen in weeks to come. It takes three to six weeks to see the effect of oil prices at the pump. Any price increase or decrease on any given day is a product of that timeline. ouch.

Sex For Gas
Police: Kentucky john paid prostitute with $100 fuel card
JULY 2--A Kentucky woman is facing prostitution charges for allegedly trading sex for gasoline. Angela Eversole, 34, was nabbed last weekend during a police stakeout at a Days Inn, where she allegedly trysted with customer Kenneth Nowak. According to court records, Nowak admitted paying for Eversole's services, in part, with a $100 Speedway gas card. Eversole was hit with a prostitution rap and also charged with doing business without an occupational license. Nowak was charged with promoting prostitution. Eversole and Nowak are pictured below in mug shots snapped following their June 27 arrests. A local prosecutor noted that it was sad to see someone selling their body for gas, in this case about 25 gallons worth. (3 pages)

"T. Boone Pickens has launched an energy plan and social-networking campaign that calls for replacing Middle Eastern oil with Midwestern wind. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-9985905-54.html) The Pickens Plan would exploit the country's "wind corridor" from the Canadian border to West Texas to produce 20 percent of the country's electricity (http://www.pickensplan.com/theplan) and provide an economic revival for rural America. Transmission lines would be built to transport the power where the demand is and natural gas, now used to fuel power plants, would instead be used as a transportation fuel, which burns cleaner than gasoline and is domestic. Pickens proposed that the private sector finance the investment, which would result in a one-third reduction, equal to $230 billion, in the U.S.' yearly payments to foreign countries. Pickens has already invested heavily in wind, notably a planned 4,000-megawatt wind farm (http://www.reporternews.com/news/2008/jul/02/pickens-shows-off-sweetwater-turbines) in his native Texas. "We've got to get renewable into the mix. The problem for this country is that we're paying $700 billion — you heard that — $700 billion a year," Pickens says. "We can't afford that. In 10 years we'll be broke if we continue that.""

Yet another plan:

"The company Sustainable Power Corp. claims to have created a form of bio-crude oil from agricultural refuse. They use agro-waste from cracked soy beans, rice and cotton seed hulls, grain sorghum, milo, and jatropha and turn it into bio-crude oil (http://www.hcnonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19786825&BRD=1574&PAG=461&dept_id=639295&rfi=6) . This crude can then be further refined into everything from gasoline to jet fuel and just about every petrochemical in between. The CEO is quoted: 'Our biggest problem is that we are too good to be true. We can literally replace every gallon of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel in the United States using just 12 percent of the waste byproducts in the country.' They also claim that their fuel burns to near 100 percent efficiency." The article doesn't mention what price the "vetrolium" would command in today's market or going forward, except to report the CEO's promise "to one day sell his gasoline for $1 less than the pump price for regular fuel, no matter what the cost. 'Even if it's $2 per gallon, I'll sell mine for $1,"' he said."

People are getting fined for bringing too much fuel back from Mexico. The confiscate your extra tanks and charge you 70% of what you paid. You can fill up the normal tanks in your vehicle, tho.

I like getting gas at Sam's Club...one way in, one way out,,,,not like at the stupid Arco near me... people come and go in every direction, the nozzles don't stretch across their Hummers so the have to back up and turn around. Then dummies park their car at one of the pumps to go in and pay, and they decide to have happy hour in the store, while 5 people are in line... so crazy!

Scarr... a few days ago I told my son about that dealer you posted about. He knew exactly which one you were referring to....he drives by it everyday to work. He's thinking it won't be there much longer. Thaks for posting the pics.. what a sign of the times....the gas prices not too long ago, and the demise of a car dealership.. and soon the demise of the auto maker...good catch of history...

Norco City is putting in over 1 mill to the local dealers to help them out cuz they bring in over a mill in revenue in taxes each year! Go Norco!!~

Right now I'm sooooo mad at the auto industry and it's practices. Some of the them need to go out of business. My best friends mom...79 just purchased a car all buy herself for the first time and COMPLETELY got taken to the cleaners. A 17K car turned into 27K. They sold her a lo-jack system for $2500.00 bucks. I used to sell lo-jack so I called them and their current suggested retail price installed is $995.00. They sold her every add on possible to mankind at crazy prices. I hope they can't sleep at night. P.S. Her mom is a retired 35 year factory ford employee from Detroit. I can't believe they would do that to their own.

worked in the car business for 10 years. it's a toilet. no conscience. they'd sell a $75 paint sealant package for $500. i'm so sorry that happened to her. never buy a car without someone there that knows what they're doing.

Wow, how messed up is that. Car dealers are scum of the earth... seriously, if you don't know what you are doing they will take you to the cleaners like you said. B.T.W. Gas at Arco in Redlands, now $1.59... whoo hoo... lowest its been in 5 or 6 years I think... Nice
