Ok, I took photo in high school, but since that is sooo many moons ago, I am gonna post here for us amateur pic takers at the concert.

I own a Canon Powershot SD600 and I love it, the video especially, but I will say that I could not zoom close enough and I was 12th row! I also have a Nikon 35ml camera, but tooo many times I develop the film only to see crappy pics, my hubby got me this camera and now 35mil is on its way out, we are going to see if we can get some $ for it and buy a bigger camera.

I have been looking at the Nikon D40...great reviews etc. but I dont think Stagecoach or other venues would allow it in due to the interchangable lenses...you would think they would if I could prove I dont have a 200ml in my pocket...duh

Does anyone have this camera and get it in concerts? Our sons play sports too, and racing, camping etc...so I think it would be a perfect camera for me.
Thank you for any input you have!

I have been looking to buy a Olympus FE-340 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom. http://www.fotoconnection.com/p84200-olympus-fe-340-8mp-digital-camera-5x-optical-zoom-silver.html

It looks pretty good and got good reviews. My antique digital camera takes 5 minutes between shots and I get about 12 shots b4 I have to get new batteries. :(

Scar, I have a camera in the similar Idea of that...great cameras and I love mine, but for other things we do, I need something faster, bigger and better (ok..ok I have a hubby already...I know what you all were thinking)

I have Nikon N80 35ml camera with a 300ml Tamron AF lense that I can use on the D40, but the problem is that it wont work as auto focus on the D40, only the Nikon auto focus lenses, which is ok cuz it comes with several lenses (the one I am looking at) the will be autofocus, I can manually work the 300ml..without complaining. Unlesssss...I step up to the Nikon D80, but for almost double in price...why do that? I need my money for Stagecoach Tickets!

I just do not want a camera with tooo many bells and whistles, while my hubby was awesome in buying my huge camera 3 years ago, I just did not use it that way, I just like to point and shoot, get a good 8x10 and move on, AND I want to see my pics NOW!! And I fully realize the D40 is a entry level camera, but for the price and what I would use it for...well perfect for me and the family to operate. JUST WISH IT HAD VIDEO IN IT LIKE MY BABY CAMERA!! ughhh...maybe next year they will, so maybe I will wait? Nope...very impatient!

Kymery, I have the canon 750 power shot like yours and I love the point and shoot capabilities. I also have the Canon Rebel XTi with one lens....18-200mm lens...does close up and super zoom with one lens. I love it and I don't have to be switching lenses all the time. There are several newer lenses on the market now that are even better than mine, but having one lens is very convenient. I love this camera!! fabulous pictures and very user friendly. I was torn between the Nikon D40 and the Canon Rebel. I did my homework and found it's all personal preference. The decider for me was purely the size of the camera..the Canon is a bit smaller, that's all. Either one would be perfect for sports, landscape, and general photography. I have the same problem with security thinking this is a professional camera because of the interchangeable lens, especially at the greek. I hide the camera and lens in different pockets and I wasn't "searched". So i can pull it off. But if they see the camera and the lens, they'll send me back to my car. watch your sales and you'll get a good deal on either. Costco and Sam's might be the best. I bought mine at Samy's camera, not the best price, but very knowledgable and they offer great one day photo classes.

Hmmm good info. I agree, that I dont like changing lenses and I think this 300ml is a bit big...need a tri pod for it, although Doug disagrees...duh! I figure if I get the D40 with the 55ml and/or the 200 (depending on package-Ebay has some great offers) then I would be set and probably always use the 200.

Maybe I will have it for the River weekend, that would be some great pics on the jet skis!!

yes for sure... we can zoom in on our tipsy asses falling off!!! ha ha...I did see the 300mm lens....nice but just a tad heavy for me..good packages available, including a tripod..but I don't use mine...

I am leaning to the one with the wide angle, telephoto, 55ml and all the goodies, bags, tripods, cases, filters (which I already have), charger, flash, etc etc...for one price. Think I will email to them and see if they will take a lessor offer. Not much more for all the extras, or just the body itself...hmmm..

We will need that tripod when we cant hold it ourselves!!

i shoot canon and i love it. it's really all about the lens. i bought an L series lens for it last year (24-105mm) and the pictures are phenomenally clear. if i shoot a wide shot, or don't get as close as i wish i had, i can crop it to the smallest little section, blow it up, and it's still crystal clear. you can't go wrong with the nikon you're looking at, or a canon 40D..... my 2 cents would be: whatever camera you get, invest in an outstanding lens and it will improve your picture quality exponentially.

Abra, thanks for that info...I do have a great lense, but too big sometimes. I think I am sold on that Nikon, now if the hubby will just get sold!! whoooo hooo. But he said I should wait till next year cuz they just might have the video feature in them by then. hmmmm

You can resize using Paint.

Click Start > Run
Type in mspaint and press enter
Click File > Open and browse for your file and open it
Enter the same % in Horizontal & Vertical and click OK
Click File > Save As and save it as a different name (so you can keep the original).

kymery - do you have it on "running man" mode? (that's what i call the sports setting) it might help with your subject in focus on the fast moving shots. or trying half clicking to set the focus on the dog, and then move the camera with him.

Yeah..that is what I was doing. but i think i was not "pre focusing" with the button 1/2 way down, then shooting...taking lots of practice!

pre-focusing rocks. watch your focal points too. my canon sometimes wants to focus on the brightest contrast item rather than what's in the middle. i watch the red dots, and if it doesn't light up on what i want, i release and press again to re-focus. you can force focal points, but you have to be in P mode and then adjust all the other settings. i'd say, for now stay in green square and just pay attention to the red dots lighting up, and good pre-focusing! = ) keep shooting! you're gonna get addicted!

with regard to resizing - i did it in photoshop before, and iphoto now so i'm not much help there.

I have given up on trying to take good pictures. It's just not possible with the little consumer versions of digital cameras unless the person or thing is within 5 feet of you and standing perfectly still for 20 seconds.

I figure if I don't want to spend a thousand dollars on a good camera then I don't really want the best pictures anyway.

With that in mind, I'm thankful for any resemblance of a person I can get. :)

I'm sure this is the long way to do it but after I load my pictures into my computer in "My Pictures" folder I then hi lite the pictures I want (usually 6 at a time) I then click e-mail these pictures and a dialog box comes up to check either make mine smaller or keep same size. I then click make smaller and then I e-mail them to myself. I then drag the new sized pics onto my desktop to send out.

the files are definitely huge. if you have photoshop you can "resize for web". otherwise, i've always used the strategy of uploading to costco or snapfish and sharing those albums. i'm assuming you're on windows?? if you're on a mac, there's a MUCH easier way to send the actual file.

"Zooomr CEO Thomas Hawk was ejected from a San Francisco art museum (http://www.10zenmonkeys.com/2008/08/14/thomas-hawk-versus-rent-a-cops/) because the security guard apparently thought his expensive camera could be used to spy on female employees. Another photographer notes that 'many people consider a professional-looking camera a threat,' and the state of California has even passed a law against telephoto lenses (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B04E5DB1E38F936A35753C1A96E9582 60) being used to intrude on celebrities' private lives. Hawk is routinely confronting security guards (http://thomashawk.com/2006/04/photographing-architecture-is-not.html) who argue that photographing their buildings represents a 'security threat.' Ironically, four weeks ago while attending Microsoft's Pro Photo Summit, he was told he couldn't even photograph the lobby of a Hyatt Hotel (http://thomashawk.com/2008/07/boycott-hyatt-hotels.html)."

Best bet is take them to Costco (Card directly)and pick the ones you want and they will put them on a disk for you to work with on your computer for 2.99...:D
There color is much better then most retail. Unless you go to a pro lab...

HP - Do you have any photog sites you'd recommend to a rookie photographer that has scratched the surface, and now really wants to learn and play around with manual settings? I've taken 2 photog classes and still get confused on AF and ISO and how each affect the shot... i know it takes practice and experimentation, but i'm looking for a good reference and learning tool on the web. ANY advice is welcome.

"A new visual search engine http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/219744/visual-search-engine-is-photographers-best-friend.html could help photographers keep track of their photographs whenever, and wherever, they appear on the internet. The TinEye search engine allows users to search by uploading a picture rather than typing in a keyword. It then conducts a pixel by pixel search across the internet, flagging up all instances of that image even if it's been cropped, merged or digitally altered in some way. It's not just for copyright enforcement though, "it's being used by researchers who need to find where an image came from to provide attribution, even people who are trying to find out who people are in old photos." It's currently in beta, but you can try it out. http://tineye.com/login"

Abra, try Samy's camera. I've taken several classes there (costa mesa). usually on saturday. I have the canon rebel and was clueless when I bought it. I wanted to get to a point of using all the features rather than just the auto features. I still find myself grabbing the little point and shoot camera...grrr.
